Whether you happen to be a foodie or a health fiend, there are a number of trends that hit the market each year that is set to be the next big thing. Interestingly, given the changing legislation around the cannabis plant, many people might be surprised to know that one of the next things slated for popular market appeal is food infused with the oil from the cannabis plant, cannabidiol (CBD).

CBD may be a lesser-known substance that is found in the cannabis plant, but it’s fast becoming popular because of the many health benefits that are associated with the substance. If you’re looking for a way to infuse a little added health into your daily diet or you’re interested in the medicinal aspect of cannabis, there are some things you need to know about CBD and what the future holds.

Since CBD is considered a healthy alternative to pharmaceuticals that can come with severe side effects, it can be used as one component of a holistic approach to health. What is CBD?

CBD may be entering the mainstream lexicon as a healthy substance, but many people don’t know that it’s derived from the seeds, stalks, and flowers of the cannabis plant. While the famed plant is full of cannabinoids, there is such a high concentration of CBD in cannabis that it’s extracted as oil. It’s common to hear about the many health benefits of marijuana, but CBD has the benefit of being non-psychoactive and doesn’t produce the high most people associate with cannabis. Fortunately, as marijuana continues to become more mainstream and as the legalization of recreational and medicinal cannabis shifts, CBD’s popularity as a newfound staple in food is likely to explode.

The Endocannabinoid System

From bananas to blueberries to flaxseed, there are plenty of potent foods out there that provide numerous health benefits. Yet, many people aren’t aware of exactly what they do for their body. Fortunately for CBD, the oil actually stimulates the body’s endocannabinoid system, which is made up of CB1 and CB2 receptors. While the CB1 receptor is linked to the central nervous system, lungs, liver, and kidneys, the CB2 receptor is connected to the immune system. Because CBD can work to open up these receptors, it actually stimulates the endocannabinoid system and works to regulate everything from mood to sleeping patterns to body ailments.  As a result of its considerable power, it should come as no surprise that CBD has a host of benefits that can improve your quality of life.

The Market Report for CBD

CBD-oil infused products may commonly come in the form of edibles like cookies and brownies, but the market is fast changing so that many healthy-minded companies are reaping the rewards of this hot product. According to the Hemp Business Journal, the industry is expected to take in approximately $1.8 billion in sales by 2020. Even more optimistic, Matt Karnes of Greenwave Advisors thinks that the growth of the market will reach nearly $3 billion by 2021 with the continuing changes to legalization around the United States. With the doors opening for marijuana and CBD, many companies are coming up with options that are organic, vegan and even gluten free to take advantage of the burgeoning market potential of the medicinal product.

CBD-Centric Foods Hitting the Shelves

Chocolate may not be considered the healthiest of foods out there, but dark chocolate and cocoa are a good source of antioxidants and have many health benefits. Sakara Life, a plant-based organics company that offers weekly meal service, has moved into the CBD market with their own line of infused chocolates. In addition, Privada Holdings business model is centered around the use of CBD oil and has been since its inception in 2013. According to John Bellefontaine, who started the company after a severe injury, “When I tried CBD hemp oil for myself, I was amazed at the pain relief and increased mobility. It was a godsend.” While Phivida provides products like hemp oil and tea, it also has its own line of CBD infused juice in flavors like orange grapefruit and raspberry blueberry. It might be healthy in and of itself to capitalize on the current juicing trend, but the added benefit of CBD oil means there are even more opportunities for providing a boost to your system than before.

As the laws around the cannabis plant continue to change, more and more healthy food products are likely to appear on the market in the coming years to take advantage of the changing tide. Whether you’re already a convert or are interested in its medicinal potential, you may want to consult an expert before deciding how CBD oil can help to improve your health and bring balance to your body.
